American Avocet (pair)
Recurvirostra americana
33.1552, -97.0129
Field Notes
Description:
To feed they swing their bills back and forth to catch invertebrates. They have the winter plumage with their heads being gray. During breeding season adult heads are a rusty color. The body is white and wings are black and white. They have dark, long, upturned bills and long light colored legs.
Habitat:
A pair stopped to feed in a shallow sand bar area of Lake Lewisville. I have not seen them since last fall.
Notes:
This is my 3000 spotting. Thought it would be fun to join with the others who made this milestone today with birds. Congratulation again to you both :)
