Field Notes

Habitat:

resident over most of North America

Notes:

I was drawn to the sound of this Hairy Woodpecker drumming on my new garden fence! He found it a great spot to sun, spreading his wings out one at a time to expose the lice (?), preen his feathers with his beak, and rest awhile. I was happy to have him spend some time in my garden but hope that he doesn't spend too much time poking at that new cedar fence....:)

Thanks, Marion! I had to take my feeders down last week as a bear was pushing down the pole and helping himself. Will leave them down now until colder weather comes and hopefully fewer bears! Good luck at your feeders!
hoping to get at least one of these at my peanut feeder this year. Thanks for the clear pic so I can id them.
