Field Notes

Description:

Small star-shaped flowers are borne on short, small-leaved flowering shoots; 10 overlapping petals, occurring in clusters at tip of small plant, approximately 5 inches tall. (This plant was unusually small compared with bushy plants, often 3 feet tall that are seen further north.) Stamen tips on young flowers pink.
Sepals are acute to obtuse and shorter than the petals; covered with short hairs (pubescent),
Leaves simple, opposite leaves are broadly lanceolate.

Habitat:

Growing on bank above year-round drainage to Appalachee River.
