Field Notes

Habitat:

Seen near the village of Semurup on the edge of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia.

Notes:

In the second picture, I wonder if the golden dragonfly in the background (and here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22990007) is the female form. Anyone know?

Species ID Suggestions

Dragonfly

Crocothemis servilia servilia

Thanks, Dave! Yeah, I know how frustrating it can be identifying them. So many look identical to my untrained eye!
It is entirely possible that the background dragon could be the female. It is the right color, but there are other species of dragons the same color too. Identifying dragons is not as easy as you might think. The image in the link looks like a male to me. I have a folder full of these male orange butterflies that I haven't ID'd yet. Males of different species will often mob each other, fighting for a good perch around the watery mating grounds. Also from my folders, I suspect that the orange and red males may well be the same species of Crocothemis servilia servilia, I haven't found confirmation yet. Dave
