Field Notes
Description:
This lady was walking around on the ground around my bean plants. About 1.5" long... a very impressive wasp. Wings an irridescent copper color, body shiny black. Abdomen with 4 large yellow spots- two on each side.
Habitat:
My garden. Happy to see her, as she'll prey on beetle grubs that may munch on my veggies.
Notes:
I was very curious as to what she was doing. She seemed sluggish, and she would not fly away- even if I gently misted her with my hose. (*Gently*!) When I got my camera, she began digging, and rapidly disappeared in the sandy soil. She emerged about 2 minutes later, about 6 inches away, and immediately buzzed away. Perhaps she laid an egg...?
