Description:

A large 2 cm Robber Fly, a male with enormous genitalia. Very hairy with a large white band on the end of the abdomen. These flies are vicious predators of other insects, even much larger or dangerous than they are. The famous "mustache" of the Asilidae is called the mystax and is believed to help protect the face of the fly when attacking more energetic prey. This one has a brownish-yellow mystax. Family Asilidae.

Habitat:

Found under a light at night, semi-rural area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
