Field Notes

Description:

Very small chorus frog (About 1 - 1 1/2 inches long) Frogs are tan or brown or even olive green with a large X on top of body although some markings may be lines or indistinct. Weight: 11 - 18 ounces. Large toe pads for climbing. Males are slightly smaller than females with dark throats. Females are lighter in color. Nocturnal. Food: Insects - beetles, ants, flies and spiders.

Habitat:

Woodlands near water - my woods is very swampy and has natural springs, pond and brook. But 3 (two shown) were found in the driveway during a rain shower at night. Widespread in eastern USA and Canada.

Notes:

This is most likely the Northern Spring Peeper subspecies. P.p. crucifer (Photos are night flash) First 3 photos are male spring peeper (His design is an X and has the dark throat). Next 3 photos is a female spring pepper (She has no dark throat, lighter in color and has a different design.)
