Field Notes
Description:
The flowers (8–11 mm wide) [3] are sky-blue with dark stripes and a white center. The short-stalked leaves are broadly ovate (1–2 cm), having coarsely serrated margins. V. persica has weak stems that form a dense, prostrate ground cover. Tips of stems are often ascending. Leaves on the lower stems are paired, but are alternate on the upper portion of the stem. The short-petioled leaves are longer than they are broad and coarsely toothed.
Habitat:
Flowering plant native of Eurasia and now widespread in the United States. This plant is typically found in areas with a history of disturbance; typical habitats include nurseries, gardens, edges of yards, moist waste areas, and borders of foundation walls.
Notes:
Spotted along the trail at the Allatoona Pass Battlefield. It is a weedy plant, although it apparently is not invasive enough to be restricted in any state. (There are other Veronia sp. listed on INvasive.Org)
