Field Notes

Description:

The pond looked at if it had been put on to boil as there were literally thousands of little tadpoles wriggling around everywhere you looked, you can see all the bubbles that they were creating in photo 2 onwards. These are tadpoles of the common frog which is the only frog species in the UK.

Habitat:

seen in my Mum's pond in her garden in Sheffield.

There have often been tadpoles and great amounts of frogspawn each year so like you say they must be desperate for a place to lay them, there was space in the middle, deeper part of the pond but they didnt seem interested in that part, just the warmer shallower bits where they were all crammed in! Thanks for the input though I'll mention it to my Mum when I see her next.
Yes, that would be my guess. I rarely see tadpoles in large bodies of water, they just get eaten by too many things. Puddles and small ponds are ideal places for them
It does look like that but as this is an urban area there aren't that many people with ponds in their gardens or people with gardens large enough for ponds! its ridiculous though as Sheffield has 5 large rivers and plenty of lakes nearby but the frogs choose to ignore them for some reason, maybe there are too many predators in them?
That's ridiculous! I've never seen so many tadpoles packed into a place like that before. Looks like there is a shortage of water for egg laying and they are all getting desperate! If you can, you should put out some more ponds or something along those lines, I bet they will be used very quickly!
The pond is quite deep towards the middle but I think that there was a big explosion of frogspawn all in one weekend due to it being so cold until late in the year so maybe they all came at once and all seemed to be fighting for the shallows which seems strange, heres the frogspawn stage: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/21558237
WOW so many tadpoles!! Was there enough water there for them? I usually don't see them so compacted unless they need more space
