Field Notes

Description:

Common native species of cockroaches in this cave. Reddish brown, possess wings but I have not seen even one fly. Medium-sized - average length about 3cm. They feed on carcasses and guano. Can be mistaken as the invasive larger American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) which is abundant in the cave too.

Habitat:

Throughout Madai caves wall and floor.

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy : 2km diameter. On the way to Lahad Datu during our Madai Trip, we stopped by Madai Caves for some cave exploration. This is my very first spotting inside a cave. This is also the first cave I have visited as far as I can remember.

Thank you for the welcome! Yeah, a few of my roaches will nibble on me.
I think if I were that cave watchman, I would electrify the perimeter of my hut. A cockroach nibbled on my toe once in Costa Rica. Yuck.
Welcome to Project Noah, Mr Goldfish. We are glad that you have contributed a lot of identification to many spottings. Thank you too Lauren. I agree that cockroaches will eat anything.... and almost everything. During one of my cave visits, I meet a "ranger" or "guard" willing to live in a small wooden hut inside a cave similar to this, every night to keep watch from birds nests poachers. Fortunately, he has not been eaten by the cockroaches yet. :-)
Really amazing. Must be a little disconcerting, if you were injured or stuck there, they would eat you.
Oh, my gosh!! I love seeing this and other pictures on the website from around the world. Great picture!
