Field Notes

Description:

A mass of brown round round objects. There are thousands of these "balls" in this "collection". These mass of round objects are vertically stuck high up the cave wall so I have to zoom my camera to take these pictures. I am not sure what these are, possibly cocoons, eggs or somethings else. The patch is about 1 to 2 meters wide with each "ball" about 5mm to 1cm in diameter.

Habitat:

Attached vertically on the wall of a cave in Agop Batu Tulug Archaeological Museum, located beside the highway between Sandakan and Lahad Datu, Sabah.

Notes:

Map accuracy : 1km diameter. I hope somebody can shed some lights on these unusual objects.

Species ID Suggestions

Ball slime mold

Leocarpus fragilis

Hi Mark, this is the cave, the chamber is quite small and bright. http://www.wongfookyee.com/HTML/Shirley/Events/2010/LahadDatuTrip/6BatuTulug/BatuTulug_01c.jpg The patch is about 1 to 2 meters wide with each ball about 5mm to 1cm in diameter and they are seem to be made up of mud. Possibly wasp cocoons ?
There's my vote Chun. How far into the caves? What size is the patch overall? I am always radiant and imaginative. Now let's ID the cave cricket eating it. 8-)
