Field Notes

Description:

A rather odd moth, very flat and about 1.5 cm in length. It holds itself scarcely more than 2 or 3 mm above the surface. The legs are banded and there are zig-zag patterns on the wings. Family Geometridae, Subfamily Larentiinae.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.

Hi Mark, I didn't even venture a guess on this one, especially because of how it looked from the side. But Juan Carlos Garcia Morales of iNaturalist gave an ID as the subfamily Larentiinae of the Geometridae. Go figure! Does look like lots of the Larentiinae on the web, shaped like this one: http://gallery.kunzweb.net/main.php?g2_itemId=76768.
