Description:

Scaly leaves I've seen it before a million times but I never bothered to identify it

Habitat:

On a forested hill side, oak, maple and birch dominate with aspen and white pine mixed

did not know about the flash powder, drP - that's really interesting!
Wikipedia says this is now known as Diphasiastrum digitatum. USDA still calls it L. digitatum. Either way, it's a lovely lycopod. Its spores were used as flash powder for photography in decades past.
