Description:
Eastern cottontails forage in open areas and use brush piles, stone walls with shrubs around them, herbaceous and shrubby plants, and burrows or dens for escape cover, shelter, and resting cover. Woody cover is extremely important for their survival. Eastern cottontails do not dig their own dens (other than nest holes) but use burrows dug by other species. When chased, it runs in a zigzag pattern, running up to 18 mph.
