Field Notes

Description:

A small falcon usually seen on its own but occasionally in pairs or small family group, rich brown upper body/wings, buff to cream underneath, soft grey head & primary wings feathers, facial markings in white & yellow with black eye strip, yellow legs, feet equipped with sharp tallons, shoulder edged in white, short tightly hooked beak yellow with tip black, bird has characteristic of hovering in mid-air while searching the ground for food which includes mice, lizards, frogs, insects or small birds. This one has prey in its tallons.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia including areas of Tasmania. This one located in western outskirts of Sundown National Park, adjacent to farming country.
