Description:

Given away by its loud drumming on trees the greater spotted woodpecker is more often seen than heard and usually hides around the other side of the tree but this one was distracted with collecting seeds from the forest floor and lodging them into holes it had made in the side of this tree, this is typical woodpecker behaviour and often stores acorns in the same way when they become available. distinguished from the lesser spotted by the red stripe on the back of its head.

Habitat:

seen at Rutland waters nature reserve in the woodland area.

I got a tree trunk that had been cut down on the community woodland, sunk it in the lawn, drilled some holes in it and loaded it up with uncooked pastry, i'll upload some photos tomorrow.

Thanks Micolo, I always hear them in the woods and can never see them but this one spent ages at the woodlands entrance to Rutland waters where I am sure you will have been :-)

Lovely photograph Debbie and well spotted.I have heard one almost daily behind my house in a coppice of trees but I can never find it with my lens,or my eyes for that matter so well done Regards micolo

Thanks Pedro, Its not very often I would get close enough to photograph one either, I hear them alot but don't often see them as they normally hide around the opposite side of the tree but this one was so pre occupied with placing seeds in the tree it was unaware of my presence, just a shame there was a branch in between which put the focus out slightly.
