Field Notes

Description:

Large about 12cm across, high dome with 'shaggy' fringe, textured top, orange/red with yellow & cream closer to base. Underside is sponge-like filled with muddy coloured sludge that looks like it would drip if the fungi was squeezed. Stem was thick & white. Will go with above ID unless confirmed otherwise later as this is as close as we have come so far.

Habitat:

Found in dry Eucalypt woodland after heavy rain - no rainfall experienced here for many months, conditions previously extremely dry. Situated at the base of a Grey Gum where Koalas frequent. Existed for less than a week before deteriorating.

Two new photos added of this fungi showing the decaying state & the sponge-like appearance of the underside of the cap. May help with ID accuracy if there are others similar.

Yes, keep having issues with upload for some reason. The fungi only seem to last a few days to a week at very most before breaking down. Look amongst heavily leaf littered forest floor of drier forest types maybe. Will post new pics later. Thanks.

Forgot to mention - not my hand! The fungi is now breaking down - already! It is like a very slimy sponge underneath, muddy green/grey, some brown, stem is thick & white. Will post photos soon & adjust ID. Many thanks for help everyone.

Thanks Mark, Leuba, RandyL. Typo on size - should have been 12cm, bit bleary eyed. I have not disturbed it yet to check underside, will do that on next trip through paddock. There's some weird & wonderful things emerging now after that much needed rain soaking over past few days, I don't want to miss any of it as a day can make a difference, amazing what a bit of natural water does.

Absolutely beautiful ! I hope our mushroom season ( if we have one this year) brings us some beauties like this one..... was the base bulbous?
