Field Notes

Description:

About 2 millimeters in length, colored as shown.

Habitat:

Found in our kitchen, where it alighted on the leaf of a rose in a vase.

Notes:

This is *not* a "true" fruit fly, but is more properly known as a "pomace fly" or "vinegar fly," family Drosophilidae. True fruit flies are generally much larger, and belong to the family Tephritidae. They are agricultural pests, whereas pomace flies are a household nuisance. Drosophila melanogaster figures prominently in genetic research.
