Field Notes

Description:

A gorgeous and intricately patterned member of the Cerambycidae family, Cyrtophorus verrucosus is among the first of long-horned beetles to appear in Spring. Its genus and species name translates to "fairly amusing remarks."

Habitat:

Crawling on a Maple whose leaves have just emerged.

Notes:

Lifer! The second photo shows how I saw the insect at first, exhibiting its mimicry of a carpenter ant. There is a red form and a black form. I have found the red form. You know when you see something and say, "Wow, that is gorgeous," you've had an awesome day.
