Field Notes

Description:

Adults grow to around 20cm. Male & female similar. Olive/yellow & bright yellow colouring, black face mask & beak. Lighter yellow belly. Yellow ear tuft is fanned at times & is quite attractive. Feeds on nectar, insects, manna, honeydew. Birds are timid, but can be observed searching flowers & leaves for food source. Call includes whistling & harsh notes especially when alarmed. The second race of this species is the Helmeted Honeyeater found only in a small area in Victoria. It is listed as critically endangered.

Habitat:

Found throughout eastern Australia. This one found in high country in garden shrubs (Grevillea sp) adjacent to woodland.
