Field Notes

Description:

This herd were found along the Kinabatangan River and consisted of between 30-40 individuals. They were feeding along the river bank and as the afternoon crept on they even went for a swim in the river.

Habitat:

Jungle along the banks of the river

Notes:

There are an estimated 1000-1600 individuals left and the largest population is found in the Lower Kinabatangan floodplain. Unfortunately, the increase in global demand for palm oil has led to increased human-elephant conflict and the elephants are now severely threatened by habitat loss as deforestation for oil palm plantations and logging continues
