Description:
A dioecious member of the aster family (Asteraceae). The absence of stamens protruding from these flowers indicate that these are female plants. There is a basal rosette of spatulate leaves. The stem and leaf undersides have a dense white pubescence; the upper sides of the leaves have just enough pubescence to give them a gray-green appearance.
Habitat:
I see these in sunny areas along the edge of woods. The plants generally are found in groups as shown in picture 3.
Notes:
There are over a dozen species of Antennaria in the eastern US, and many of these are difficult to distinguish. I based this ID on the list of Antennaria species obtained from USDA.gov. If that species list is complete, the shape of the basal leaves (not really seen in the photos; sorry!) and the appearance of the flowers are enough to call this A. neglecta.
