Field Notes

Description:

Small beetle red with black spots.

Habitat:

We found about a hundred of these little guys when I was raking up grass under the apple tree. I'm pretty sure they were eating those moldy apples.

Species ID Suggestions

Seven-spotted Lady Beetle

Coccinella septempunctata

Comments (1)

Nice find, Connor! These beetles are strictly predatory (aphids and other small, soft-bodied arthropods) so it is unlikely they were eating the apples. However, they do overwinter as adults and prefer to congregate in areas where they can stay a bit warmer. It is quite possible that they were still there from the winter.
