Oheloberries
Vaccinium reticulatum
19.3229, -155.437
Field Notes
Description:
Medium sized shrub with drooping, bell-shaped red flowers. Thrives in bare lava rock; they can tolerate up to 10 inches of ash fall. The shrub produces edible berries similar in taste to cranberries. Notably, the oheloberry is a prominent food source for the endangered goose, the nēnē.
Habitat:
Volcanic lava field in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (altitude greatly exceeds 3300 ft).
Notes:
As I suspected, these berries are endemic to Hawaii.
