Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized shrub with drooping, bell-shaped red flowers. Thrives in bare lava rock; they can tolerate up to 10 inches of ash fall. The shrub produces edible berries similar in taste to cranberries. Notably, the oheloberry is a prominent food source for the endangered goose, the nēnē.

Habitat:

Volcanic lava field in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (altitude greatly exceeds 3300 ft).

Notes:

As I suspected, these berries are endemic to Hawaii.

You bet! I forecast that the "next time" isn't too far in the future.
Regrettably not, Dan. At the time, I didn't know anything about this plant. I wish someone could have tipped me off earlier!
