Description:

Caterpillar
~2" long
Black and orange
Spines that look like black locust thorns

Habitat:

Tall grass

Notes:

Crawled out of the grass onto concrete slab. Put back in grass later found same in rafters of barn. I guess it nearing the end of a life cycle?

I saw one if these last summer and was lucky enough to watch it form a chrysalis and turn into a butterfly. I would agree that it is a morning cloak caterpillar. Cool pictures.
