Description:

Stilt family
Nesting an young.
Breeding plumage. Reddish head and neck. White body and black and white wings. Long neck and wings. Long slender, upturned bill.

Habitat:

Shoreline, marsh, estuaries.

Notes:

Newly hatched young. second image shows mom protecting her babies. Last shot is what happens when baby strays too far.

These are lovely birds. After hatching, the young not only feed themselves, but they can also swim.
We thought the parents of the other brood was trying to hurt them we realized they don't like the babies to mix. So the parents keep them in line. The babies of the Black - necked Stilt look almost identical. You can some slight differences in bill size and markings on the face.
Thank you, Jemma, Ashley and Antonio. There were two broods of these and one of the Black-necked Stilt. Noticed the punishment for the little ones to stray too far is the parent will intercept and step on it. Almost made me think it was drowning it.
The third picture is fantastic! Adorable little guys :)
