unfortunately I do not have any clearer shots. I took this photo in a hurry during a short visit to Harrisonburg.
I agree with gatorfellows. Do you happen to have a clearer shot of one or more of the caterpillars? Also, you have one of the best screen names on PN! :-)

These are tent caterpillars not fall web worms. Tent caterpillars form their webs in the crotch of trees in late spring or early summer. Eastern Tent caterpillars are are traditionally black with a gold or white stripe down their back. I cannot tell from your photo. :)
