Field Notes

Description:

Small woodpecker. White back. Wings, uppertail, neck and chick are black. Outer tails are white with black spots. Bill is black and small. Quite similar to Hairy Woodpecker, but smaller in size and bill.

Habitat:

Common in suburbs, parks and forests of North America.
Spotted in my backyard.

Notes:

We enjoy watching a couple of downy woodpeckers in our yard since the last winter. They obviously enjoyed the bird feeding pole and are now coming back each day, same time.
