The female pheasant is much smaller and less colourful than the male and doesn't have such exaggerated tail feathers. Pheasants spend their days on the ground and only choosing to fly a short way up in to trees at night to roost, safe from ground predators. Pheasants in woodlands are more often heard than seen and have an unmistakeable call.
