Field Notes

Description:

Onoclea sensibilis, the sensitive fern, also known as the bead fern, is a coarse-textured, medium to large-sized deciduous perennial fern. The name comes from the observation by early American settlers that it was very sensitive to frost, the fronds dying quickly when first touched by it. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus Onoclea.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest with brook running through it. Gully Brook Park, Lake Metroparks System, Willoughby, Ohio, USA.

Sure! I used to have some of this growing and was so sad when a hard frost killed it back.
Thanks for the ID, JenKnight!
