Field Notes

Description:

This was found on my patio deck.The cause of death of the female sadly is unknown. This flesh fly is in the family of Sarcophagidae. Flesh flies usually feed on rooting animals, but was probably feeding on the juices in my compost bin along with hundreds of fruit flies.

Habitat:

They are found in most regions in North America. Can commonly by found on what they breed on such as animal flesh or meat.

Notes:

This fly often breeds in carrion and feces, making it a possible vector for disease. The larvae of this species can cause myiasis, as well as accidental myiasis. It is potentially useful in forensic entomology.
