Field Notes

Description:

The females can vary in appearance but will exhibit some yellow. This one had a very yellow head. Light brownish-gray on wings and back. Rump was yellowish and tail feathers light brown. I never got a look at the front. Male is more yellowish-orange and black with large white wing patches. The bill is straight and silvery gray.

Habitat:

Spotted in eastern Washington in the Cascade foothills.
