Field Notes

Description:

Fiery skimmers have distinctly broadened abdomen and their bodies are distinctively shorter than their wing span. Males have golden-brown thoraxes and red abdomens and females are in brown yellow colour. The species ranges across eastern and northern Australia, the Moluccas, New Guinea and neighbouring islands. The species inhabits boggy seepages, streams and swamps.

Habitat:

Although the description describes the typical habitat, the spotting location is not particularly wet. Spotted on a fence row in a semi-urban situation of houses, gardens and patches of disturbed forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

New species for this location (4 years spotting).
