There were two, but one flew off. These were not vocal except for whatever was in the tree I couldn't see. But either that was some other raptor and they were harassing it or a young bird.

This looks like a red-tailed hawk to me! Must be a juvenile due to the brown barred tail. RTHs don't get their rusty red tail until they are about a year old. Other identifying markers on this bird is the dark belly band and the dark patagial marks!
Also, RTH are very vocal when they are not happy! They will usually call to each other and/or vocalize at you if you are in their territory.
