Thanks, @Chun. The Adults are easily identified for this Haaniela echinata as both the Males and Females have fully developed false wings. Although they have wings, they are not capable of flying.
Maybe the larger ones you have spotted are the adults. Just remember that if you have any Phasmid ID problem, AlbertKang is there to save the day :-)
Well, thanks to Albert too. You're right, I don't know why I thought this one was so big. I only had the one photo to go by and must have thought it was one of the biggers ones I spotted. I think all the huge ones I spotted alone, because I know I spotted some more than 8cm.
Hi Dan, it was actually AlbertKang who got this one identified. I showed him my pictures of the 3 nymph instars we spotted more than 2 months ago. Thanks again AlbertKang and your Phasmid group. By the way, you over estimated the size of this spotting. It is only 58 mm / 5.8 cm :-) The largest one we spotted is 8cm, and it is still not yet an adult.
They are considered Nymphs from L1-L5/L6 i.e. before sub-adult. But they are slow growing specie, so this one could be 6-9 months old already!
Thanks for the ID Chun and the info Albert. Hard to believe it's still a nymph at this size!
Nice find, Dan. Despite its large size of 12 cm, this is still a Nymph, probably instar L5-L6 and not even sub-Adult as it still hasn't develop wings. They are one of the more common Phasmid in Borneo jungles :)
