Field Notes

Description:

The male has a brilliant red body with black markings on the face and wins. The female is more subdued but colorful with a gray to tan bory withered beak, red in the wings and a smaller black area at the base of the beak.

Habitat:

Woodland edges, thickets, yards, gardens and shrubby urban areas.

Notes:

One of the best known birds in North America
