Description:
The coot is the larger cousin of the Moorhen with a distinctive white 'shield' above its bill. lives mainly on fresh water lakes, breeds and winters in the UK.
Quite noisy when defending its patch against other birds.
Habitat:
seen at Potteric Carr nature reserve owned by the Yorkshire wildlife trust
