Description:

Large Carrion Beetle, 1.5 cm, Family Silphidae.

Habitat:

Came to lights on the porch, semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

Carrion beetles were used in a very interesting study in which the loss of flight in beetles has been correlated to an increase in species diversity. http://www.sci-news.com/biology/article00172.html.
