First announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010, World Rhino Day celebrates all five species of rhinoceros: black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos. Rhino numbers have dropped dramatically due to human intervention. Nowadays few rhinos can be found outside of protected areas, and even there they find themselves at risk. In 2018 the main threats to rhinos continue to be poaching for their horn, habitat loss and political conflict.
