Field Notes

Description:

A man found this fruit bat when it was a baby, supposedly abandoned by its mother. The cage is kept open so it is free to roam the island and remains somewhat wild. It was a great opportunity to see one of these adorable yet strange mammals up close and it was very keen on papaya, being careful to eat the flesh and spit out the seeds!

Habitat:

These bats are found in abundance on the Seychelles islands, helping to disperse fruit seed.

Notes:

Fruit bat curry is considered a delicacy in Seychelles. (No I did not try it, nor did I want to!)
