Field Notes

Description:

This is an olive/gray colored snake with a checkerboard pattern and a yellow stripe running down the length of its' back (It has two additional stripes which are not visible in the photos.). It has black marks by its' eyes. This one was approximately 2 ft. in length.

Habitat:

I found this snake in my back yard among some pots. Habitat includes deserts and grasslands close to water sources.

Notes:

I'm sure this guy came around looking for water. I keep several sources in my yard. FUN FACTS: 1. In addition to striking and biting as a form of defense, the Checkered Garter snake can also emit an odor that is foul smelling to deter predators. 2. It is non-venomous 3. They give birth to live offspring with an average liter size of 13, but have been known to be as large as 30.
