Field Notes

Description:

Like other arums, this plant has long-stalked, heart-shaped leaves which are deeply veined in white or cream. The flowers of arums are found on the thickened central axis of the plant, which is tightly wrapped in a large fleshy sheath. Once the flowers are pollinated by the insects drawn to it, green maturing to red fruit form in tandem with the leaves dying back. Also known as Italian Lords and Ladies.

Habitat:

It grows in moist and generally shaded habitats but will tolerate sun when there is reliably damp soil.

Notes:

Maltese name: Garni
