Field Notes

Description:

This huge Robber Fly flew in the window of the car at Arriaga, Chiapas. It was so loud and active that I had to refrigerate it for a while to photograph it. It had a long shiny dark spine-like extension on the tail. It looks hard but is actually very flexible and the fly can move it up and down and sideways like a cat's tail. It can even move just the tip up or down. It certainly makes it look more menacing. Family Asilidae.
