Field Notes

Description:

Your typical "ladybug". Shell red, with 19 spots. Pronotum (area just behind the head) is white, sorta saddle-shaped, with curved black areas toward the central area. About the size of my pinky fingernail.

Habitat:

On my asparagus bean vine, happily devouring the aphids.

Notes:

Even though this species is not a native, I couldn't have been happier to discover this ladybug! We are having an awful problem with aphids, and I refuse to use pesticide spray in my garden.

Introduced from Japan, I think, to help in garden and farm pest control. They and their larvae (esp. the larvae!) are voracious predators of many garden insect pests, such as aphids.
