American Robin (newly hatched)
Turdus migratorius
41.904, -72.4698
Field Notes
Description:
This posting is a follow-up to my posting "American Robin (Nesting)" of several days ago. The robins' nest this morning became the home to three brand-new, newly-hatched robins. The tiny birds are covered with a very light, downy cover of fuzz; their eyes are tightly closed. They are pretty much just little naked pieces of birds right now! The fourth egg is in the process of hatching.
Habitat:
Backyard. Under the porch.
Notes:
What a wonderful Mother's Day surprise to peek into the nest and see these little scraps of life! The pictures aren't all that great; it's a hard spot to get a camera into in the brief moments when Mama Robin leaves the nest.
