Description:
Sepioteuthis lessoniana, commonly known as the bigfin reef squid or oval squid, is a commercially important species of loliginid squid. It is one of the three currently recognized species belonging to the genus Sepioteuthis. Studies in 1993, however, have indicated that bigfin reef squids may comprise a cryptic species complex. The species is likely to include several very similar and closely related species.
They are not very big in size, usually up to 12 inches.
Habitat:
Coastal reefs, mostly water column especially near the surface.
Notes:
This specimen was spotted during a night dive, actively hunting.
They feed mostly on crustaceans and sometimes, small fishes as shown in Picture 1, where it caught a small fish.
Squids are very good in camouflage, flashing and changing their colors depending on situations they are in.
