Description:
Super tiny frog. One of the first frogs you will hear in Spring. They are really easy to identify by the X that runs across their backs.
Habitat:
During mating season you can find them in just about any vernal pool or pond you can find. Otherwise these guys like to hang out in leaf litter on the forest floor. They can also be found hibernating under logs and behind loose tree bark in the winter.
Notes:
I found this peeper trying to cross a road on a rainy night. It was probably trying to get to a vernal pool nearby to find a mate. Cars can be a major problem for amphibians as they divide habitat that many of them need to cross. This peeper was lucky that I came along and scared him off the road.
