Field Notes

Description:

A violet with small, white, purple-blue veined flowers. The flowers are significantly smaller than those of V. sorroria, the common blue violet. The leaves are roundish to oval and are coarsely toothed. The flower stem may be red (as shown here) or green.

Habitat:

I see these in partially shaded areas along the edges of woods. This overlaps the areas where I see blue violets, but in my experience blue violets will also grow in sunnier areas such as the middle of a lawn.

Notes:

The current classification of V. blanda now includes plants that used to be considered separate species based on stem color, hairiness, etc (V. palustris and V. incognita, for example). These are now believed to be variation within a single species rather than diagnostic of separate species.
