Congratulations! Beautiful colors on that one.
Beautiful series Luis, Congratulations! I've never seen this one before.
What strong colors! this is an awesome spotting!
Congratulations Luis! These beauties have been chosen as spotting of the day! Checkerspot butterflies “mud-puddle” for minerals in a creek bed. By sipping moisture from mud, rotten fruit or animal feces, butterflies take in essential salts and minerals lacking in their diet of nectar. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152823569115603&set=a.10152383557885603.943728.10150120463815603&type=1 https://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/335221750554062850
Thank you Juan Carlos for the ID and the link.
Thank you Sachin, ToshimiDowaki, mariana1, isabella1 and vicky1 for the nice comments.
Thank you Bayucca for your time IDing this beautiful butterfly. Our friend Juan Carlos Garcia Morales added "melitaeoides" to the ID.
After re-checking all possibilities, I think it is Chlosyne marina, Red-spotted Patch or Marina Checkerspot.
Definitely a Chlosyne sp., but a tough one! I need some more time, since I am quite busy the whole day. I leave my "working links" here, because I have to close my windows and shot down my browser. Marina was also my first thought, but there are some others and all with a great variabilty within the species. I'll come back! http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/chlosyne_endeis_pardelina_live1.htm http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/chlosyne_marina_sw_mexico_live1.htm http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/chlosyne_eumeda_w_mexico_live1.htm http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/chlosyne_eumeda_nw_mex_live1.htm http://www.texasento.net/eumeda.htm http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabast/redspatch.htm
you're welcome Luis, i leave the species part for bayucca or anyone interested ;-)
Thank you very much Nuwan for the ID and the link. Maybe this kind of butterfly is very variable.
