Field Notes

Description:

This is a different pond than I saw the geese at last time. They sure do get around! And they've managed to keep all 8 babies despite the Red-Shouldered and Red-Tailed Hawks in the neighborhood (and who knows what other night-time predators.) I noticed a lot of tension between these two adults and the third that has been hanging out with them. They would not let it close enough that you would see it in the photograph. I wonder if it's one of last year's gosling getting the heave-ho? There were 4 adults at the beginning of this season, I wonder now if it was a sibling that has already struck out on its own. (There are other flocks or creches in the neighborhood that are not raising babies at the moment.)

Habitat:

Spotted at a wooded detention/retention pond in an office building complex in Kennesaw, GA
